JOURNEYING TOGETHER THROUGH A PANDEMIC (2020)
As we invest in our young people and they learn about the message of the gospel, our prayer is that they would become peacemakers in our world. This fall, with other youth groups and bible studies on hiatus, a couple of staff have led a COVID-safe discipleship group with a few teenage guys. One of the young men, Cris, initiated a 50/50 campaign on our Facebook page, and raised $1000 for his home country of Honduras!

When most resources in the city reduced services or shut down, we needed to adapt quickly. Providing individualized support for youth, young adults, and families has been more critical than ever. What's remarkable, though, is how many of our teens and young adults are continuing to grow and pursue life-long goals. This video highlights how Sam, our Post-Secondary Coordinator, adapted to support our young adults in pursuing their goals this year.

In the inner-city, youth often face numerous barriers to success in online schooling. Many have parents who struggle with mental health challenges and the impacts of childhood trauma, resulting in less academic support at home and lower attendance rates. These students are already prone to falling behind their peers. The added challenge of online school is like climbing the Grouse Grind: it’s an extreme test of their resilience, courage, and determination.

Restrictions on gatherings began in March 2020 and continued in various forms throughout the remainder of the year. Gathering in community is critical to the wellbeing and mental health of the youth and young adults we journey with. We had to find new ways to reflect God's compassionate love and create safe places for youth to share their struggles and victories.
