HOUSING SUPPORT: ASHLEY'S STORY
"I’ve been connected to Inner hope for just over 10 years. As teens, my friends and I went to Youth Extreme (the youth group that Jenny and Carla had created). When the Boundless program started, one of the youth leaders asked me if I wanted to become a part of it. Fun fact: Mark and Merissa (the current Youth and Community Program Manager and his wife) were youth leaders at the time. They were still very single and very childless!
A big milestone that happened as I’ve been a part of Inner Hope was finding stable housing. I had lived with my grandma for 6 years when she suddenly passed away after complications due to a heart surgery. Not only did I lose my grandma and my housing, but I also had to support my family, make sure I was all good, and find somewhere else to live. I couchsurfed for a while before finding my own place. I was dealing with some other immense challenges at the same time: starting a new job, having my mom hospitalized because of her mental health, and learning how to live independently. It was a really tumultuous 6 months in my life.
I don’t think I would’ve “landed on my feet” and ended up in such a good place without Inner Hope. Diana (the former Director of Programs) and Sam (the Post Secondary Coordinator) came to the funeral, which provided a calming presence during such an emotional day. Sam did so much for me by listening, encouraging me, and just being there when times were really rough. That support meant so much and really grounded me.
Inner Hope’s mission, providing hope through relationships, is real. It’s the most legit thing. Through all the people I’ve met—the staff, the volunteers, the other people in the program—I’ve been empowered to do great things, and I think that’s reciprocal."
