REAL RELATIONSHIPS: lEO'S STORY
Leo is a supporter of Inner Hope, and runs his own charity called Westcoast Wheelchair Adaptive Boxing, which works to empower individuals living with disabilities through adaptive boxing. Leo has been a huge support to one of the Inner Hope residents, offering him boxing lessons as an outlet for stress, and setting up up a punching bag in The Home.
My first interaction with Inner hope was in 2019. What drew me to Inner Hope was the stories of success shared by families and volunteers, and those in the community. My friend introduced me to Jenny at Reality Church, and shortly after I was invited to join the Inner Hope Ride for Refuge team. I had just done the Grand Fondo (a Vancouver to Whistler ride) on my hand cycle. Although I joined the Ride very close to the actual date, I still managed to reach my donation goal.

Inner Hope has inspired me to be more engaged in the community. I was happy to be able do my own feat to raise funds last year, in spite of the pandemic. I completed the Grouse Grind by wheel barrow walking on my hands. It took six hours to get up the mountain. I decided to include Inner Hope in that fundraiser (along with Westcoast Wheelchair Adaptive boxing) because I really believe in what they do in our community.
My own journey has shown me that movement is more than just a mechanical adjustment in the body—it's about survival, and the need to progress towards healing, freedom, and independence. Inner Hope is a sanctuary that is a safe environment for people to grow and have freedom to be themselves. It’s a place of hope no matter what your background is. This hope comes through real relationships and the power of community.
